Like a number of Te Papa's Lindauers, this portrait of Mihiterina Takamoana was part of the Dominion Museum's Fine Arts collection. The date and circumstance of its acquisition are unknown.

The portrait returned to the Hawke's Bay for the 2005 exhibition Gottfried Lindauer - 'Shadow maker'.
